What is Berlinica?
Berlinica is a New York-based multimedia publisher that brings books, ebooks, movies on DVD, and CD music from Berlin, Germany, to America. All of our titles are in English or subtitled. Most of our covers are also available as T-shirts, wall calendars, posters, mousepads, or mugs.
Who is behind Berlinica?
Berlinica is owned and run by Dr. Eva C. Schweitzer, a book author and former metro reporter from Berlin who divides her time between Berlin and New York City, where she works as a cultural correspondent. She has written seven books, among them Manhattan Moments, a short story collection, and a Ph.D. about the development of Times Square in New York.
What kind of media do you carry?
Berlinica offers fiction, contemporary titles as well as older ones, and non-fiction. Our non-fiction program focuses on 20th century Berlin history and guide books. We also publish a cookbook, books about the Berlin Wall, the Cold War, and photo books. We will have books about Berlin architecture, biographies, the Berlin art scene, and restaurants. We carry music from the Golden Twenties and Berlin movies (with English subtitles). In the future we will also be selling items such as games, cards, city maps, and everything else imaginable.
How can I find and buy Berlinica books?
Our website, www.berlinica.com, showcases our inventory and also news about Berlin. All our books are distributed by Ingram and sold at Amazon and Barnesandnoble.com. They can also be ordered by any bookstore. Our ebooks are available at the Kindle Store and any other device, such as the Nook, the Sony and the Kobo e-reader, the iPad, the iPhone, Android-phones, and BlackBerry. We also sell calendars, T-shirts, and mugs at www.Cafepress.com/Berlinica and www.Zazzle.com/Berlinica.
Can book stores get books directly from Berlinica?
Yes. Currently, we ship direct bulk orders with an usual discount and no returns. You can also order books at Ingram; we have bookstores editions of most titles with a usual store discount as well, also no returns. However, we are currently in the process of signing up with a small press distributor. Please email to info(at)berlinica(dot)com.
Where do you get your books from?
We buy licenses of German-language books for the U.S. market, mainly from Berlin-based publishing houses, and we translate them. We do not acquire books that already have an American publisher unless they’re out-of-print. We also invite proposals from authors who have already published successful books. As for content, we consider every note-worthy topic as long at it is Berlin-related, relevant, and of interest for an American audience. However, please don't send unsolicited material by snail mail.
I’m a Berlin-based publisher. How can I get my book into the USA?
If we find a book that we’re interested in, Berlinica will make you an offer to buy the rights, and will continue to produce an English version of the book. Since translations are expensive, it helps if there is an English version already or if you have a backer. We usually also sell the book in Berlin stores that cater to English-language tourists.
I’m a Berlin-based filmmaker or a musician. How do I get distributed by you?
We need a master disc, and a cover, or at least material for a cover, as well as some biographical information and a photo of yourself. Movies must be subtitled in English language. Then we’ll get your DVD or CD into distribution at Amazon.com and other channels, and we will also promote it on our website, and elsewhere.
Do you sell printed books from other publishers?
No, we don't act as a seller for books from German publishers in America or for books from American publishers in Germany, and also we do not sell German-language books in the United States. If this is what you need, look for a distributor.
I’m a publisher or an author. If we have a contract, will I get paid?
Yes! You will get royalties. If you are an author, we would typically pay your Berlin-based publisher, who will then pay you according to your contract.
I own a Berlin-style business catering to Americans. Can I place an ad?
Yes, you can! We offer banner ads and text ads on our website. You can also place a flyer as a free download on our website (free for the customer, not for you, of course). We can also place ads in our books, and we can produce, print, and distribute your promotional material at our book readings and other events. In those cases, we might accept payment in form of beer and bratwurst (in bulk). And we are happy to exchange links with Berlin-themed websites.
Are your authors available for readings or interviews in the U.S.?
All our authors are available for interviews. That is spelled out in their contract. They also do readings; but since most of our authors live in Berlin, we need ample time to prepare. Also, for readings, they’ll need to get paid.
I’m running the German department of a University or a school. What can you do for us?
We offer books at a volume discount to universities and college book stores. Also, we can make our authors, or experts available to speak to your students. In the future, we also might print dual language books, if this is warranted by demand. If you have a topical dissertation (about Berlin), we can talk about publishing it.
I‘m a huge Berlin fan, and I have way too much money for my own good. How can I help you?
Just fork it over . . . Seriously, you can make a tax-deductible donation to Berlinica to promote the publishing company or any single book, especially the translation for the book. You will be named in the book and thanked over and over again. You can even make suggestions for having a specific book translated. If you don’t have that much money, you can still become a paying member of the yet-to-be-founded Berlinica fan club and get a free lapel pin, and books and other merchandise at a moderate discount. Don't worry about details, that will be figured out. If you own a website that is even vaguely Berlin-related, we can exchange links and inform each others’ audiences about events.
